The manuscript tradition of the Anthologia Latina and the Leidensis Vossianus Latinus Quarto 86 (which contains De Spe) are described. The historical process by which the Senecan epigrams came to be attributed to Seneca is traced from Scaliger's editio princeps to the present. Attitudes toward Hope in Roman religion and popular belief are discussed, and De Spe's literary genre (the locus de Fortuna) and models are examined.
